Sewing is one of my greatest pleasures. I have been working with needles and fabric in one form or another since I was 9 years old, starting with sewing my own, and then my children’s clothes.
I began quilt making in 1976, putting my work on walls instead of beds. This allows a greater freedom in exploring ways to manipulate the fabric. Several years ago I discovered the joys of unfinished edges, and loose threads. These have become an important part of my current work.
I find myself looking at nature and man-made structures with the question: How could that be interpreted in fabric? How can I incorporate those elements of texture and design into my work?
The needle is an extension of my fingers, the threads and fabric my palette. For me, color and pattern are equally important as my finished work. Fabric art is appealing to me, and I hope to others, due to the fact that it’s more than a visual art. It is very much linked with our sense of touch and with our memories.

I attended an arts festival last weekend; displaying and selling my work. Saturday was a spectacular day and I had lots of folks visiting my booth and the sales were consistent all day long. Woke up Sunday to pouring rain which led to even more rain until mid day. It gave me an opportunity to visit with a young fiber artist for a long introspective chat.
We were talking about fiber art versus painting to which she said that painting is technically fiber art as it is painted on canvas. Great point.
We pondered an issue that has been visited many times by many people. That of why fabric/fiber art seems to lean toward function over form. This led us to wondering about our own thoughts regarding our work. Many times thinking that it is "less than" or not important some how. I thought about my own journey away from this attitude. I grew up in a household where sewing was woman's work that was necessary to living. We sewed clothing, mended, knitted and created many functional items. An opening reception will be held for a solo show of my recent work at the Earlville Opera House: July 10th 12 to 3 PM in the Arts Cafe Gallery. The show will be at the Earlville Opera House until September 19th. Also visit the other galleries for a 6 artist contemporary quilt show as well as a community quilt show.
